Our very first Localventure interview, Focus Hypnosis

As regular readers of the blog will be aware I'm looking to give insights and supports for small business owners out there and one way of doing this is to use the expertise that exists in the business community. With this in mind I recently chatted through this idea with one of our newer members and Richard Hennessy from Focused Hypnosis agreed to run me through some of the key areas around his business.

Here's the first part of the interview :

Richard, thanks for agreeing to discuss your business with us can I start by asking if you can give me a rough idea of your background and your story before you set up your business ?

My interest in helping people began at school age. I was a mentor to younger kids while I was in my last year, I did a city & guilds counselling course which lead to a sociology A level then a social science degree. I wasn't sure what aspect of social work I wanted to do but I did know that I didn't want to be just dealing with other people's stress day after day as I don't handle stress well. I looked at being a social worker or prison officer but none of these did it for me. During this time I was working in the service industry and found I had a passion for coffee and became a barista (coffee expert). This work allowed me to do something I enjoyed while paying my bills but I was desperate to be my own boss but didn't know what area I wanted to work in. A throwaway comment by a friend made me consider being a hypnotherapist and I was delighted to discover it was perfect for me.

So when did you set up the business and tell us more about how you became interested in hypnotherapy and where you trained ?

I first became interested in hypnotherapy when a friend was telling me how she had seen a hypnotherapist to help her get over a relationship ending. The hypnotherapist my friend saw wasn't very good and while telling me all about the problems she had had she said "You would be a better hypnotherapist than HIM!" which made me consider hypnotherapy as a career for the first time.
As I looked into the industry I quickly realised that there were some real cowboys out there who offered very little by way of training but charged a huge amount of money. After a lot of research I found that in my hometown of Sheffield there was a hypnotherapy training school that was one of the best in the country. The course was run by 2 ex-psychologists who are now full time hypnotherapists and they provided me with very practical based training. I was hypnotising fellow course members by the end of the first day! This hands on approach gave me a great deal of confidence in what I was doing and how to use these new found skills effectively.

Richard, you specialise in helping your clients stop smoking - how did you develop this as the core theme of your business ?

Through further research into marketing after I graduated from my course I discovered that in most industries there is always a large number of generalists. Above these are a smaller number of specialist and above them are an even smaller number of experts. I have always tried to be the very best at whatever I have done, whether that is mopping a floor or hypnotising someone so I was determined that I wouldn't be a generalist as that didn't fit with my desires for my business. The issues hypnotherapy can treat are also very diverse and trying to tell everyone about every issue I can treat would be almost impossible so I decided I had to focus on one area. I chose smoking because it was where I had had most experience. I smoked for 13 years so was well aware of the thought patterns of smokers and the issues involved in stopping. I was also hypnotised by a fellow course member to help me to stop smoking and it worked! I had no cravings or mood swings and I actively enjoyed the process of becoming a non smoker and I wanted to share that enjoyable experience with other people through hypnotherapy.

That's the first half of the interview with Richard. We'll be running the second and final instalment tomorrow. Watch this space.

La FeeNoire - Welcome to Localventure

I'm really pleased to be able to add another new member to the site this afternoon, here's the full breakdown :

La Fee Noire Maternity
Proprietor: Rachel Bloom
Bio
La Fee Noire Maternity (The Black Fairy) was created by a mum-to-be, desperate to retain her own sense of style during her pregnancy. Finding it difficult to satisfy her need for funky and functional maternity clothing,  this Devon mum sought out stylish and alternative maternity wear for like minded yummy mummys.
As a business women working from home, The Black Fairy (La Fee Noire) was inspired by the birth of a baby girl who also required that a mum worked from home. So a true cottage industry (complete with thatch and sleeping dog at the door!) was created and has grown from strength to strength. The core business consists of a range of both High street and designer brand maternity clothes featuring petite to plus size maternity and everything in between. Whether size 4 or size 34 there is something offered to ensure every funky mum-to-be turns heads with her bump!
Two main objectives supported the creation of La fee Noire. The first being the aim to provide a range of maternity clothes wearable pre pregnancy, during pregnancy and after pregnancy! The cut and styling had to accommodate the changes experienced during these three stages. So Zipped Up maternity clothes was designed to suit the needs of all three stages in a woman’s life! Thus a favourite top could be used throughout all the seasons of womanhood!
Secondly and following a pregnancy sporting a particularly heavy bump, Rachel researched the market for a product to help relieve the symptoms of the debilitating condition SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction) which affects up to 1 in 3 pregnancies. Like 80% of pregnant women she suffered back ache during the majority of the 9 months.
Other than those offered on the NHS (ugly, white truss style garments) there was nothing on the market that seemed to offer both support and comfort as well as the pretty looks of lingerie.
So  Hug-a-Bump® SPD Maternity Support Band was created and launched following stringent user trials over several months. The product now offers many expectant mums welcome relief from lower back pain and symptoms of SPD so often experienced in pregnancy. Offered in plain beige and also now pretty lace, this product is proven to be effective and allows the wearer to continue comfortable mobility.
See the whole range and the exclusive Hug-a-Bump® SPD Maternity Support Band at www.lafeenoire.com

Signing off for the evening ...

I have a had a very productive day today - managed to get another tranche of prospecting letters and e-mails out to clients today (hi there if you're reading this as a result of one of those, i hope you'll be able to join this little business community we're starting to build here). In addition I've also been able to add three new members as well :

Norton Signs & Focused Hypnosis in Sheffield
and Balastra Corporate Sword Fencing in Manchester

A really hearty welcome to you all !

In addition, I also have at least another three new members to add to the blog first thing in the morning. At the moment I'm working hard to reach the milestone of 100 members - this is the level I kind of have in mind on the blog before I start work on transferring to the full website.

The site I have in mind will mix different elements of a business directory, member support organisation (with articles, advice, workshops, member events, interviews etc) and business consultancy/coaching in which I have a real interest.

Remember that the advertising and much of the support elements will remain free to our early members - you're the ones who are helping me get to a critical mass and hopefully the support and work I do for you will be of assistance to your businesses too.

As well as the prospecting, my next project is to begin featuring more business related content here and in that vein I'm already in discussion with a couple of people who may want to be featured in a business interview - watch this space.

Remember, if you're a small business or budding entrepreneur and want some free publicity or to do some guest blogging to big up your business or an event you're planning - please feel free to get in touch. You can contact via the usual methods :

Welcome to Localventure- Focused Hypnosis

We're pleased to welcome Richard Hennessy and his business to Localventure, he's the information that Richard supplied :

My name is Richard Hennessy and I own and run Focused Hypnosis, the only stop smoking specialists in Sheffield. I offer the very best chance for a smoker to stop and to stay stopped. I use a multi session approach which is individually tailored to each clients habit which is more effective than other hypnotherapists who do a one or two hour "intensive" and generic programme.
March 10th is national no smoking day and to mark this I am offering something special. I am reducing my normal fee from £260 to just £195. Out of this £195 I will be donating £65 to Weston Park Cancer Charity here in Sheffield. I am running this offer to anyone who books treatment in March and I hope to raise £3,000.

What is Localventure all about ?

Put simply, as a small business owner myself I understand that small business and entrepreneurship are the powerhouses that drive the UK economy forward.

I created the Localventure blog to add an extra dimension of support to UK business by offering something for nothing. So to help your business you can advertise here for free. You can include web links and an image in your ad for free. i'll then regularly rotate your ad so it appears at or near the top of the blog as often as possible. In addition, when you want to update, give us news or even just do a quick guest blog entry you can also do that for free. It's simple.

What's it in for me you ask ?

Well I want to drive revenue from this idea in the future but I need critical mass of members to do so - you get free advertising/web presence and I get great members and cool content.

When we have around 100 members upwards I'll migrate to a full website and begin to offer paid for services to you and new members but, it will always be free to advertise with me if you get in now !

I'm hoping to offer a range of interesting business related services including

New Media Support : blog & website design and upgrade,

The type of alarm and other electronic security solutions you choose is very important. However, if you want it to be effective and meet the requirements of your insurer or the police, it is important that the system is installed and maintained in accordance with the required standards by a competent installation company. Many companies or individuals will tell you they can install an alarm, often cheaply, but are they:-
  • capable of meeting the standards of workmanship and service you would expect?
  • properly security vetting all relevant staff to British Standards?
  • operating a 24 hour call out service and able to respond within 4 hours?
  • fully insured?
  • completing a thorough security survey and risk assessment of your property?
  • installing reliable, up to date equipment?
  • issuing you with a Specification for your system?
  • offering you a maintenance contract?
  • meeting the stringent requirements of the police or your insurer?
Select Security meets all the above criteria.

Accurate websites and contact details

Setting up this blog I have begun to be involved in business to business prospecting in earnest. Contacting hundreds of potential client companies and offering them the services of Localventure. It's been an interesting process that I'm enjoying immensely and finding a tremendous challenge. Many business owners are really interested and supportive. We're in discussions with a number to join the blog and also (hopefully) provide other services for which we may earn consultancy fees. However, one of the things that has struck me is how often when prospecting I discover that the website address for a business (say that is listed on another business directory) is no longer working. I'm assuming this means one of several things - the business has unfortunately gone under, the nature of the business has altered and the site no longer fits or that the site has temporarily gone down or they've changed hosting provider. If it's the first reason then clearly it's a sad situation and Localventure is really no more help to them. However, if the site has 'gone' for any other reason then I'd suggest it's commercially not a great situation to be in.

In addition, even those businesses with working websites often have contact details which are difficult to locate and in some cases only offer one or two contact methods.

So here's my thoughts on how I'd advise business to cope with some of these issues - some of it is fairly common sense stuff which is why I'm surprised more businesses don't do it :

1) Check you website every day to make sure it's up and running - I had a problem with my own business site on Friday, it was simple to resolve (just some issues with certain browsers not immediately updating amended content) but if I hadn't checked the site a couple of times in the morning and spotted the errors then the changes I'd made to the delivery tab wouldn't have been implemented.
2) Do a weekly in-depth or test purchase check to make sure the 'under the hood' stuff is working properly. I think it's worth doing this even if you sell things regularly and the client experience is working ok - it's always worth going back and re-living the customer journey to make sure it's as you expect - having created my own e-commerce site from scratch in close partnership with my designer I (like to think) I have a good grasp of the mechanics of the site.
3) If you make any changes to the site - name, products sold, closing down for upgrades - anything that makes the site disappear or look different always leave a holding page with full reasons and contact details up in it's place. Even if your business changes or interrupts you might get calls or contacts that could help future networking. Any client contact should always be viewed as positive
4) I've always adopted a 'belt and braces' approach with regards to client contact - so on my site I have a contact us/info request form; e-mail address, landline telephone number plus I always include all this info in my e-mail signature as well. I even now add my gmail video account if people want a video call ! As a consumer I personally tend to ask for information and support in different ways depending upon what I need - sometimes I phone, sometimes e-mail and sometimes pop round - I think it's therefore best to cover the bases where possible.
5) When you do make changes or want people to know what's happening in the business I'd suggest a couple of extra items to try as well - e-mail shots are a quick way to get info out to your current client base and if you do blog or tweet keeping people updated is both fast and easy. Setting up this kind of capability is incidentally something that LV can help with if you're interested.

I'm not suggesting for one second that massive revamps of websites are needed - in most cases it's pretty easy to add in little bits of extra copy for free or at low cost.

Hi to business in Manchester, Leeds and London

Hi there if you're visiting Localventure as a result of the prospecting work I've been doing today.

Rotating clients information

As we build up new members I've committed to rotating blog entries so each business has the opportunity to appear at or near the top of my blog. This way they should get maximum repeated exposure over time.

Once we switch to a standard website from the blog format this will be less of an issue as finding businesses and featuring them will become simpler - in the meantime we need to build up a critical mass of members to make the switch to a better format of site worthwhile and cost effective.

In the meantime you'll see MCC Small Electrical, RS Book-Keeping and MPS Electrical re-entered on the site below this blog post with others (plus new members) to follow in coming days.

Twitter and a general news update

Good morning everyone, had a some really good success with prospecting on Friday and we picked up a number of new clients from only a couple of dozen sales contacts.

One of our existing clients, Rob at RS Book-Keeping has been kind enough to offer a 25% discount on his annual fees to all Localventure companies and I am giving details of this to all new members as they join and I hope that over time other LV companies will be able to offer similar discounts, offers etc. - the main of this blog is to provide support and information of interest to small business and entrepreneurs and a sense of community and involvement it vital to make this project work I believe.

Normally I try to make a lot of noise on Twitter as well as here on the blog. Unfortunately I'm struggling to get onto the website this morning - as a result, if you're an avid Twitter watcher I can only apologise that we've gone temporarily quiet on that front for the time being.

I wanted to list of clients so far - now we're getting a few, I'm going to list be sector and area - over time I plan to migrate the blog to a proper website and still feature all of our clients on the new site for free (we'll eventually start to drive revenue by providing other enhanced services for new and existing clients over time - the core proposition - supporting business will of course remain totally gratis!). When we do move to a new site I'm beginning to think how we'll feature your business - and I'm open to suggestions - size, sector, market, location, b2b, b2c - all options up for consideration. If anyone does have ideas I'm open to suggestions.

Here's our list for the time being :

Company                                               Sector                       Location

Select Security Systems                      Alarms/Security          Leeds
Mike Lester Photography                     Photographer              Leeds
Invitations for all Occasions                 Wedding                      Leeds
MPS Electrical                                       Electrical                      Leeds
RS Book-Keeping                                 Book Keeping              Pontefract
MCC Small Electrical                           Electrical                       Leeds

(there is a focus on West Yorkshire at present simply by virtue of the database i'm using for prospecting - hopefully we'll expand across the UK over time).

Lastly, I wanted to recommend a book I've just started to read - you might know from previous posts I'm part way through How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie (still haven't finished and will review in full when I'm done), I've also just picked up 'Don't Sweat the Small Stuff ... and it's all small stuff' by richard Carlson. A short pithy book full of practical exercises to really take the edge off stressful situations both in business and life in general. I'm around two thirds of the way through and enjoying it immensely and finding it useful. I'll review fully in a later post but would certainly suggest picking up a copy from your local independent book retailer.

Does installing an alarm cause damage to my decorations?

No not at all, our installers have been installing alarms for many years, and know how to install the equipment quickly, efficiently and as unobtrusive as possible. We use cavity walls whenever possible to run cables. This ensures the highest possible installation with virtually no wires, we also install the latest wire free systems, call us for a free quote

Why choose Select Security Systems?
